Feb 19 2020 Our work on living materials based on engineered bacterial biofilms has been highlighted in recent Science News. This also signifies the rapid development of the emerging field of Engineered Living Materials (ELMs).
Feb 13 2020 Bolin An, a Ph.D. student in the Zhong group (now an exchanged student at MIT), did a poster presentation on “Engineering Living Cellular Glues with Synthetic Biology” at the International Conference “Living Materials 2020”, held from Feb 12~14 in Saarbrucken, Germany. (Due to the Coronasvirus outbreak in Wuhan, the other four members unfortunately didn’t make it).
Feb 12 2020 Prof. Zhong delivered a telecommunicated lecture as a keynote speaker on “Engineered Bacterial Biofilms as Living Functional Materials” at the International Conference “Living Materials 2020”, held from Feb 12~14 in Saarbrucken, Germany.
Feb 6 2020 A research paper “Conformable Self-assembling Amyloid Protein Coatings with Genetically Programmable Functionality” has been accepted for publication by Science Advances. (Congrats to Yingfeng Li, Ke Li and other co-authors!)
Jan 23 2020 Prof. Zhong’s “News and Views” essay titled “Spores Hit the Spot” has now been published online by Nature Chemical Biology. This essay has provided a short summary and expert view on recent work “Resilient Living Materials Built by Printing Bacterial Spores” from Prof. Voigt group at MIT published in the same journal.
Nov 19 2019 Postdoc Xinyu Wang & Yuanyuan Huang had been funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
Nov 5 2019 Yingfeng Li and Mengkui Cui, two senior Ph.D students, gave presentations titled “Patterned Amyloid Materials Integrating Robustness and Genetically Programmable Functionality” and “Exploiting Mammalian Low Complexity Domains for Liquid-liquid Phase Separation Driven Underwater Adhesive Coatings” at theNational Doctoral Forum on Frontiers in Chemical Engineering on November 4-6 in Quzhou, Zhejiang, China. Yingfeng won the “Best Presentation” award.

Nov 22 2018 Professor Zhong and Ph.D student Mengkui Cui attended the 3rd International Conference on Biological and Biomimetic Adhesives (ICBBA 2018) conference held in Haifa, Israel. Prof. Zhong gave a talk titled “Engineering Living Cellular Glues with Synthetic Biology” and Mengkui made a poster presentation based on his Ph.D. work about “LLPS Driven Protein-based Underwater Adhesive Coatings” at the conference.
Oct 19 2018 Prof. Zhong gave an invited talk at the Young Scientist Forum of the AsiaNANO 2018, held in Qingdao, on our research progress about Living Functional Materials based on Engineered Bacterial Biofilms. Special thanks to the Forum Chair, Prof. Lele Li, for his invitation!

Aug 1 2018 Prof. Zhong, Xinyu Wang, Yingfeng Li, Mengkui Cui, Bolin An and Suying Liu attended the ACS Publication Symposium: Innovation in Materials Science, held at the ShanghaiTech campus. Dr. Zhong has been selected by the symposium organizers to give a talk in the session of Materials for Biology on “Programmable Bacterial Biofilms as Living Functional Materials”.
